Thai Port Develops Rail Infrastructure

The port administration of Laem Chabang has approved a new plan for creating a “Unified Rail Operator”. The plan consists of organizational measures, as well as budget and investment planning.

The investments will be used for rail infrastructure development, container storage areas and logistics terminals, as well as for acquiring new gantry cranes.
The project presumes attracting private investments in new equipment, container trucks and IT systems.

It is expected that initially the new terminal’s annual throughput capacity will be approximately 1 million TEU, and it will be later expanded to 2 million TEU. The project total budget is valued at $74.5 million and it will be competed by 2012.

The port of Laem Chabang is situated in the Eastern part of Thailand. It consists of seven container terminals. The port is able to service Super post-Panamax vessels.
