Damco has launched a new weekly LCL service (less than container load) for shipping cargo between Asia and the Baltic region.
LCL service allows customers to unload cargo in lots smaller than one container. This service allows to send relatively small lots of cargo over the regular routes by filling one container with goods owned by several different cargo owners. There is a similar service in Russia offered by rail operators in assembled container trains or post trains. According to Damco, the new service will allow smaller shippers to deliver their cargo by using the services of forwarding partner-companies direct to Damco’s global logistics and distribution center in the port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. From there the cargo will be further delivered to the Baltic states. The company is also launching a new special department which will be responsible for planning the inventory levels of cargo shipped on the new service. “This service will help us to find an efficient way to deliver the cargo over the Pacific to relatively small cargo owners. Considering the fact that the freight rates charged by most key line operators began rising again, they will be able to save their money” - said Kenneth Nielsen, Damco regional manager in the Baltic region.
